Avondale, Ariz. (November 14, 2009) - Ken Butler III had a strong run at Phoenix International Raceway until he lost power in the motor of his Aaron's Outdoors Mossy Oak Chevrolet on lap 87. The motor problem forced Butler behind the wall and ultimately ended his day with a 32nd-place finish in the Able Body Labor 200 Saturday afternoon.
The Aaron's team was poised for a solid weekend after posting the 22nd-fastest time during final practice Friday afternoon, but the Aaron's Dream Machine was too loose during qualifying and posted the 39th-fastest time Saturday morning.
When the race started Butler quickly proved how fast his Aaron's Dream Machine really was. Only eight laps into the 200-lap contest the first caution came out and he had already moved the Aaron's Dream Machine into 32nd position. Butler radioed to his crew that the car was loose on entry and tight on exit. Crew chief Jeff Kirkendall decided not to pit so they would not lose track position.
The race restarted on lap 12 and continued for a long green flag run. During that run Butler radioed to his team that the car was tight center off and loose on throttle. Despite handling problems, the Aaron's Dream Machine was fast on long runs and Bulter continued his climb through the field, making it to the top-20 by lap 77.
The second caution of the afternoon flew on lap 77 in the middle of green-flag pit stops. The Aaron's team had not made their stop yet and was able to come in for service during the yellow on lap 80. Kirkendall called the Aaron's Dream Machine in for four tires, fuel, and a track bar adjustment and sent Butler back out for the restart on lap 83 in 19th place.
On lap 87 Butler radioed to his crew that he heard a small pop going into turn one. He lost power in the motor of the Aaron's Dream Machine and was forced to the garage on lap 87, 113 laps from the end of the race. The engine problem relegated Ken Butler III and the Aaron's team to a 32nd- place finish.
"We just can't catch a break," said Butler. "I am disappointed that we didn't get to finish this race. It took a little while for the Aaron's Outdoors Mossy Oak Chevrolet to get going but it was a really good car, especially on long runs. The guys did a great job in the pits. I can't wait to get back on track next weekend and finish the season with Aaron's and all the guys on a good note."
Carl Edwards grabbed his fifth NASCAR Nationwide Series victory followed by Kevin Harvick, Reed Sorenson, Clint Bowyer and Brad Keselowski rounding out the top five.
The NASCAR Nationwide Series will close out the 2009 season at Homestead-Miami Speedway next weekend. Live race coverage begins on ESPN2 at 4:00 p.m. EST and will be broadcast live on MRN Radio at 4:00 p.m. EST.
