Clermont, Ind. (July 27, 2009) - R3 Motorsports headed into its fifth short track event this past weekend at O'Reilly Raceway Park with Ken Butler III and the No. 23 Aaron's Dream Machine. While the team initially struggled with a tight race car, things were beginning to look up when suddenly the No. 23 Chevy was spun by another car. The team was not able to repair the damaged Aaron's Dream Machine, forcing Butler to settle for a 31st-place finish.
After heavy rains delayed practice, Butler reported that his Aaron's Dream Machine was too tight in race trim. Although the R3 team brought Butler's favorite car (chassis #37) back to the track after a late spin at Richmond, the team was never able to get the car where he was completely happy in the limited practice time.
When the race began on Saturday, the team knew it would need to address the handling issue. After multiple adjustments on track bar and air pressure during the first pit stop on Lap 6 the No. 23 Aaron's Dream Machine showed signs of improvement.
On Lap 23, Butler pitted for a few more changes to the Aaron's Dream Machine and he was ready to go racing. As soon as the Aaron's Dream Machine went back onto the track Butler was able to start passing cars on the preferred outside groove at ORP, and he was on his way to yet another top-20 finish.
Unfortunately on Lap 48 the caution flag flew when the 01 car driven by Danny O'Quinn Jr. sent the No. 23 Aaron's Dream Machine spinning into the middle of turns three and four. The damage was too heavy for the No. 23 Chevy to overcome. The crippled car had no choice but to limp to a 31st place finish.
Although the finish wasn't what the young R3 team or driver Ken Butler III had hoped for, it was enough to keep them in a locked in position of 29th in driver's points headed into Iowa.
"The race didn't go the way we hoped for or expected," said a frustrated Butler. "The car was just never any good … then we got wrecked by the 01."
Next weekend the Aaron's team travels to Iowa Speedway for the US Cellular 250. Television coverage will begin at 4 p.m. on ESPN.
