Monday, June 05, 2006 - Aaron’s No. 99 Dream Machine Finishes 31st in Caution-Marred Busch Series Race
(June 3, 2006 Dover, DE) A crowd of more than 100,000 fans watched Michael Waltrip and the Aaron’s Dream Machine run the StonebridgeRacing.com 200 at Dover International Speedway. Despite solid practice runs on the concrete one-mile oval, rainy weather wiped out the official qualifying action and placed Michael Waltrip in 20th starting position, as cars were lined up according to owners’ points.
Early in the race, Waltrip was able to recover from a penalty when a pit stop went wrong and one of the Dream Machine’s tires ended out on pit road. Officials forced Waltrip to restart the race on lap 36 at the end of the longest line, placing him in 29th position.
Later, on lap 100, Waltrip reported to Crew Chief Jerry Baxter that the Dream Machine was “kinda’ pushing now. We shouldn’t have changed the track bar.” Despite the car’s push back, Waltrip was able to keep the front end turning successfully enough to climb a few positions.
On lap 148, Waltrip captured the Lucky Dog by jumping onto the lead lap as the last car after the race’s eighth and final caution. The Dream Machine made it up to 18th position before Waltrip reported engine problems that would force him out of the race on lap 180. Aaron’s Dream Machine ended up with a 31st-place finish.
The eventual winner of the StonebridgeRacing.com 200, Jeff Burton, posted the biggest come-from-behind win ever in a Busch Series race. Burton overcame 36th-place starting position for his second Busch victory of the season.
Next week, the No. 99 Aaron’s Dream Machine is in action again at Nashville Superspeedway. Driver David Reutimann, who captured the pole for this week’s Craftsman Truck Series race, will try for his first Busch Series win behind the wheel of the Dream Machine. SPEED Channel will carry the Busch qualifying runs from Nashville at 5:00pm ET and FX will air the Federated Auto Parts 300 Busch Series race with pre-race coverage beginning at 7:30pm ET on Saturday June 10.
