(June 17, 2006 - Sparta, KY) NASCAR Driver David Reutimann proved that he’s double trouble for the drivers in his circuits, as he posted strong finishes in both races he ran in Michigan and Kentucky on the same day.
Reutimann had a great run, finishing 15th in the Craftsman Truck Series race in Michigan before dashing to Kentucky to race the No. 99 Aaron’s Dream Machine in the Meijer 300 Busch Series race. Reutimann required two separate helicopter trips and an airplane ride to get him from Michigan at 5:15pm to the infield of Kentucky Speedway by 7:00pm.
Reutimann made it with time to spare before the race and he looked fresh and sharp as he approached the Aaron’s Dream Machine and crew. Busch Series veteran Mark Green took care of qualifying the car for the series in Friday’s practice runs, and did an excellent job, posting a 25th-position qualifying run. However, due to the driver change, Reutimann had to start at the back of the pack, making his eventual 8th place finish all the more impressive.
At the beginning of the race, spotter and General Manager of Michael Waltrip Racing Ty Norris told Reutimann to be careful on the start as things can get a little crazy in the back, and they did.
There was a track record-tying total of ten cautions for 46 laps in the race. One red flag occurred when a hard wreck by driver Jeff Fuller sent him to the hospital with a broken wrist and broken finger. Fortunately for the Dream Machine, the lap 22 caution stemming from the car getting spun through the front stretch grass when #66 Greg Biffle hit Reutimann in the rear was less serious.
Reutimann reported the Dream Machine felt a little loose after the contact, but a series of well-timed pit stops coupled with aggressive driving by Reutimann helped the Aaron’s car move from 27th-position to as high as 6th-position. By lap 99, the Dream Machine had passed a dozen or more other cars and was running some of the fastest laps in the race. After working his way to the group of cars running in the front of the pack, Reutimann would remain in 6th or 7th position from laps 140 through 194 of the 200-lap race before finishing the race in 8th place.
This strong showing in Kentucky marks two top ten finishes in two weeks for David Reutimann and the Aaron’s Dream Machine. Reutimann takes the wheel again this Saturday for the AT&T 250 at the Milwaukee Mile, the oldest continually operating race track in America. Reutimann will again run in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series the same weekend, but this time the only racing will be on the track itself. The Truck Series race is at Milwaukee Friday night, and the NASCAR Busch Series race will be there Saturday night.
You can watch Reutimann qualify on Saturday, June 24th in the Aaron’s Dream Machine starting at 6:00pm EST on SPEED Channel. Televised pre-race coverage begins at 8:30pm EST on FX.
