DAWSONVILLE, Ga. (July 20, 2009) - Chase Elliott and the No. 9 Aaron's Lucky Dog Dream Machine traveled to Cordele, Ga.'s Watermelon Capital Speedway over the weekend to make their sixth start in the Georgia Asphalt Series (GAS). After earning his first Late Model pole, 13-year-old Elliott beat out NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver David Ragan and GAS series heavy hitters TJ Reaid and Casey Roderick to claim his second LM win in some of the best racing fans have seen at Cordele.
"It was an awesome weekend at Cordele," said Elliott. "There were a lot of fans in the stands because David Ragan and Dad, Bill Elliott, did an autograph session before the race so that made it even more fun! We had an awesome car and the team was pumped up from having run so well at Orange County and never getting to race because of the rain so we were ready to go. The car's set up was perfect and I drove the Aaron's Lucky Dog Dream Machine from sixth to second and then was contending for first before long. We swapped the lead several times before the end of the night and we were lucky enough to lead the last lap for the win."
Elliott's practice times were barely among the top five early in the day, but no one would know that when the No. 9 took the track for qualifying. Elliott, the second to last car to roll, picked up over 4/10's of a second to post a time of 16.114 seconds, knocking Reaid out of first to win the Alexander Landscaping pole, the first of Elliott's career. After the draw for inversion, though, Elliott and the Aaron's Dream Machine were moved to sixth for the start of the 100-lap race. With Roderick and Reaid, who then sat first and second in the GAS series points lined up in front of him, Elliott had his work cut out for him.
After a quick caution on the first lap, Elliott started his drive to the front. Elliott took the lead from his Bill Elliott Racing teammate, Casey Roderick, on lap 38, and the two swapped the lead back and forth several times as the laps wound down. Coming to lap 99, Elliott had the lead by 3/4 of his car and momentum on the outside of Roderick when Roderick turned up into Elliott's left rear quarter panel and sent the Dream Machine spinning. But Elliott was able to keep the No. 9 rolling and got back to speed before the caution flew.
Meanwhile Roderick, having lost control of his car, caused the No. 6 of Chris Whorton to pile into the drivers side of his car and caused the field behind them to pile into a mess some dodging and others getting a piece of the action. Elliott was able to resume his position for the green-white-checkered restart, and Elliott and the No. 9 Aaron's Dream Machine were leading when the checkered flag fell, as Elliott claimed his second Late Model win in only his 12th start.
Elliott now leads the GAS series points by only five points over teammate Casey Roderick and 28 points over T.J. Reaid.
The BER team will take the Lucky Dog Dream Machine to Montgomery, Ala., next weekend for their fifth start in the ASA Southeast Asphalt Tour series in 2009. The event will be televised, tape delayed.
